Overview
The Marrakech medina is walked, not driven, and its lanes follow no plan you can read
from a map — which is why it is best seen with someone who knows it.
This walk covers both halves of the old city in about four hours: the working souks north
of the Jemaa el Fna — Semmarine, the dyers’ lane and the carpet market — and the monuments
to the south: the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs. It ends at a Berber
herbalist’s shop.
The walk starts at the Café de France on the Jemaa el Fna, where the square’s own history
sets the scene before the route for the day is agreed.
The same route runs twice a day: a morning departure at 10:00, and an afternoon departure.
